Seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia) claim the Northern Cardinal, which is either a failure of imagination or a testament to how much we collectively love a red bird. Probably both. Here he is mid-flight, wings fully open, making a case for himself. The blue background does the red no favors in the sense that it makes it do even more work.

Red this bold needs a matte finish. Glossy would turn it into a holiday card. Thick museum-quality paper keeps the color saturated and the print flat in its frame, and the archival inks hold up over years of wall time.
